  1. TMD

The term “Orofacial Pain” is a broad classification of many conditions which includes Temporomandibular Disorders (commonly called “TMD” or “TMJ”). TMD is an umbrella term for clinical conditions affecting the jaw muscles, the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), and associated structures. One of the causes for pain in the jaw muscles may be from tension held in these muscles due to repeated jaw clenching because of stress.  We have descriptively termed this condition as “Stress Related Facial Pain.” The MyRelaxer specifically targets this condition.

TMD encompasses a wide range of complex conditions, many of which are poorly understood and by definition at least assume that there is an abnormality within the jaw muscles and/or in the TMJ joint.  An overview by the TMJ Association can be found at   http://tmj.org/Page/34/17 .  We encourage you to access this site and read their description.  The purpose of the MyRelaxer is NOT to correct anatomical abnormalities within the TMJ but to aid in relieving tension in the jaw muscles.

If you have facial pain and have not previously sought medical/dental attention because of it and have not had a diagnosis of TMD, the gentle stretching routines of MyRelaxer are safe and likely will be effective in relieving or reducing your discomfort, but you must use only as directed with GENTLE stretches and discontinue if there is any pain at all.

If you have seen a healthcare professional for your orofacial pain and/or have had a diagnosis of TMD in the past, the MyRelaxer should only be used under the supervision of your healthcare professional, who may recommend regular use of MyRelaxer with other aspects for your overall management.  It is your obligation to seek the advice of your healthcare professional prior to using MyRelaxer.  Not doing so may cause unexpected harm to you.  TMD is a complex range of poorly understood conditions.  You must guard against any possibility of your actions with this or any other device that may make your condition worse.  Therefore, you MUST firstly discuss this with your healthcare professional!!

  1. Loose lower front teeth, periodontal disease, dentures

MyRelaxer fits over the top of the lower front teeth and engages the tongue side of those teeth.  With a gentle downward traction, while exerting minimal pressure on these teeth it assists the jaw muscles in gradually stretching resulting in a relief or reduction of tension in these muscles.  If you have periodontal or gum conditions, if your teeth are loose or mobile, or if you have dentures, do not use MyRelaxer unless you are under the direct supervision of a healthcare professional.

  1. Rebound Migraine Headaches

MyRelaxer is a powerful tool at relaxing you.  Some migraines are triggered by sudden changes in stress and a sudden relaxation may trigger a “rebound migraine.”  Migraineurs should use with caution to avoid a sudden relaxation.

  1. General Usage

MyRelaxer is safe to use IF USED ACCORDING TO THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE.  It is your responsibility to read and understand the instructions prior to use and follow the instructions during use.  Of utmost importance is the downward traction be applied GENTLY, to the point where you experience a gradual stretching of the jaw muscles, but not to the point of discomfort or pain.   Again, GENTLE DOWNWARD TRACTION is the key!  Your symptoms will likely improve immediately with gentle downward stretches according to the instructions.  Almost certainly, they should improve within several days with gentle stretching.  Forceful stretching can be harmful and delay your progress if not cause injury.
